Reusable Straw Solutions

  • Nov 15, 2018

The world’s plastic problem must start somewhere, make sure your reusable straws are certified and compliant.

The anti-straw movement became viral after a video was released of a plastic straw extraction from a turtle’s nose.

So Why Straws?

Simply put, we have a plastic problem, according to Business Insider. It’s not going to end with straws, but we must start somewhere. Plastic straws add up to about 2,000 tonnes of plastic waste, entering the ocean each year, affecting marine life and the human food chain.

Straws are “one of the top 10 items found in beach cleanups” according to the University of Toronto. One piece of a much larger problem. Straws carry a negative stigma of laziness and a lack of compassion. However, for many, they are a necessity, including some with disabilities. Instead of fighting the category, we need to rely on innovative solutions.

Straw Grade Requirements

  • Rust-free
  • Dishwasher Safe
  • Temperature Resistant
  • Durable

To be rust-free, temperature resistant and durable, stainless steel straws must be rated: 18/8 or 18/10, apart of the 300 series (18% chromium and 8% nickel). The higher the nickel content, the more resistant the stainless steel is to corrosion.

Products Will Need To Pass:

Proposition 65

  • Total lead in paints and surface coatings
  • Total lead in materials
  • Phthalates

FDA

  • Coatings and material
  • Consumer products
  • Containing lead (Contact with Mouth)
